Why do TV frequencies matter?

Every free-to-air service in Melbourne travels on a multiplex that sits on one RF channel at one centre frequency. Knowing those numbers tells you whether your antenna covers the right band, whether it is aimed at the right transmitter, and which services your TV should find after a tune.

What is the difference between a full auto-scan and a manual tune?

An auto-scan sweeps every channel and rebuilds the list from scratch, which is the right choice after a move or a change at the transmitter. A manual tune adds one RF channel at a time and is useful when a single multiplex is missing or when a weak neighbouring transmitter keeps overwriting the strong local one.

Why do channels go missing?

Channels usually disappear because the signal level has dropped, not because the broadcaster stopped. Water in the cable, a corroded connector, a failing amplifier, a shifted antenna after a storm, or an old scan holding on to a distant transmitter are the common causes. A fresh scan confirms whether the services are still reaching the antenna.

Do I need a VHF or UHF antenna?

It depends on the transmitter. VHF services sit on RF channels 6 to 12 and need a large, wide-element antenna. UHF services sit on channels 28 to 51 and need a smaller, closely spaced array. Where a transmitter uses both bands you need a combined antenna, and the lookup on this page states which one applies.

What should I do if only one network is missing?

A single missing network almost always means one multiplex is arriving too weak or is being interfered with. Note the RF channel for that network from the table, retune, and if it still does not appear the antenna or cabling is favouring some frequencies over others and needs checking on site.

When should I call an installer?

Call an installer when a retune does not restore the services, when reception breaks up in wet or windy weather, when the antenna is on a steep or two-storey roof, or when several TVs in the house are affected. Those point to the antenna, cabling or distribution rather than the TV.
