TV reception in Altona
Free-to-air TV in Altona comes from the Melbourne main transmitter at Mount Dandenong / Mt Dandenong, 47.1 km to the E (bearing 87°). It broadcasts on VHF Band III (channels 6–12) channels 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, horizontally polarised.
At this distance a high-gain VHF antenna is the standard fit; homes in dips or behind ridgelines often also need a masthead amplifier.
Pockets of Altona shadowed from Melbourne can use the Melbourne Inner Suburbs translator (13.7 km ENE, UHF channels 40, 41, 43, 44, 45, V polarisation), which needs a UHF antenna pointed the other way, a common cause of "wrong antenna" reception faults after DIY installs.
