TV reception in Smithfield
Free-to-air TV in Smithfield comes from the Cairns main transmitter at Mt Bellenden Ker, 51.1 km to the SSE (bearing 160°). It broadcasts on VHF Band III (channels 6–12) channels 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, horizontally polarised.
At this distance a high-gain VHF antenna is the standard fit; homes in dips or behind ridgelines often also need a masthead amplifier.
Pockets of Smithfield shadowed from Cairns can use the Cairns North translator (3.3 km WNW, UHF channels 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, H polarisation), which needs a UHF antenna pointed the other way, a common cause of "wrong antenna" reception faults after DIY installs.
